Celebrate the Chinese New Year at the NYC Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & Festival!

This year, the Chinese New Year falls on January 23, 2012, ringing in the Year of the Dragon. The tradition celebrates spending time with family, food, traditional customs and rituals, and gift giving.

No matter what is going on in your life, you can take consolation in the arts.  Even though people come to the Blue Moon as a sanctuary, I still have to send them out into the world.  Presently, don't miss these wonderful exhibits:

MOMA:  Diego Rivera's Murals are works from Rivera’s 1931 exhibition at the Museum.  After 80 years they have now returned to N.Y.C.  The murals are monumental images of the social stratification of the city during the Great Depression.  (through May 14, 2012)

Morgan Library: Features Delacroix’s French revolution drawings and some of the greatest examples of works on paper of the period from Paris's famed Musée du Louvre. Included are eighty drawings by such noted artists as David, Prud'hon, Ingres, Géricault (through Dec 31, 2011)

Frick:  Picasso drawings from an 1890-1921 collection.  Picasso is Picasso and this Museum is so beautiful that just for the sake of the building it is worth a visit.  (through January 8, 2012)

Guggenheim:  works by Kandinsky produced when he was teaching at the Bauhaus.  Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan created a monumental and visually daring installation.  He is best known for his satirical sculptures.  His work is installed to hang from the renowned spiral structure ceiling of the museum; it is quite an impressive feat.  (through January 22, 2012)

Brooklyn Museum:  “Youth and Beauty:  Art of the American Twenties.”  This massive exhibition shows the work of 68 painters, sculptors and photographers exploring a new sort of modern realism between the Great War and the Great Depression.  (through January 29, 2012)

Their profession was a calling and there work was made by the pride of their hands. They had desire, vision, and the inspiration to create. There was communion in their contemplative productions in all that one touched was crafted by another human being.

Blue Moon’s elaborate historic preservation remains functional and modern; every architectural and ornamental detail that was salvageable, Banisters wainscoting, has been restored and, where necessary, recreated. Memorabilia found in the building newsprint, children’s homework, and calling cards, are lovingly collaged and displayed.

The essence of the Blue Moon project was to transmit an earlier sensibility from a time when people identified with the value of their work and felt a greater connection with worldly relationships. A reminder of a code of behavior when not just the artist was more sensitive but society’s protocol as well.   ~Settenbrino
